The Aqueous Hues, Splatters & Shimmer of Artist Sarah Robison

A Weird Little Interview With Abstract Alcohol Ink & Mixed Media Artist Sarah Robison

As a mother of four, a longtime snowboarder, and creator of things aqueous and bursting with hue, we’re pretty sure Sarah Robison is a badass.

And her art? Well, it’s rich, robust, layered, and lusty. It’s also like what would happen if you could take a handful of those bright Siamese fighting fish from your childhood—you know, the feisty Betta with iridescent plumes trailing behind their every underwater move—preserve them, smash their existence onto canvas, wood, or ceramic tile, and then seal it all in with a coat of varnish. Brutal, yeah. But also kind of dreamy, no?

Sarah Robison, the Betta fish preserver of the art world.

Whether what you find in Sarah’s art is what you seek: mountainous layers, oceanic ripples, galactic explosions, the feminine mystique… there is a definitive, aqueous calm and movement within Sarah’s work which cannot be denied. Experience it how you will, and check out her vibrant and watery world, as well as her responses to our weird little questions below.

Artist Sarah Robison Knows How to Let it Bleed

Us: How is it that you have come to breathe?

Sarah: By taking myself back from controlling forces and leaving behind constricting environments.

Us: In which ocean has your heart landed and how did it get there?

Sarah: The Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Northern California. It's where I grew up and my favorite memories of it are when I would ride my horse by it, and through it.

Boom! Meet Sarah Robison and her abstract alcohol ink and mixed media art. And those minty nails, DAMN.

Us: How will you let it be different every time?

Sarah: By keeping a mental list of ideas I haven't tried yet.

Us: What does underwater smell like?

Sarah: Like weightlessness.

Us: What value do you place on winter?

Sarah: For me it represents a time for rest and mental hibernation, and finding clarity. And one of the places I always find the most clarity is on my snowboard.

Us: What does it mean to be made in the image of the Universe?

Sarah: That we are made of the same material.

Us: Where do you go when you cannot move?

Sarah: To sleep.

Cardi B triptych, DRIP DRIP.

Us: What do you remember about tomorrow?

Sarah: That being able to make plans for it is a gift, even if those plans don't happen, or happen differently.

Us: What is the meaning of the color of your eyes?

Sarah: It means that no one else can truly know.

Imagine floating this through six inches of fresh.

Us: What are the consequences?

Sarah: Good, as long as you make sure to learn something from them.

Us: Who told you it was ok?

Sarah: I did.

Us: Where is your impetus?

Sarah: In my children's hearts, and in my desire to live and experience this world.

Us: How will you continue?

Sarah: Sometimes slowly, one little step at a time, and sometimes in leaps and bounds all at once, but always forward.
